Presentation Description â This presentation, cosponsored with the Historic Shepherdstown Speaker Series, will address the success of the Main Street movement over the past 45 years in demonstrating the effectiveness of a combination of historic preservation, including preservation of green spaces, economic development, marketing and business restructuring strategies in strengthening the competitiveness of the downtowns of historic small towns and historic urban neighborhoods. Main Street America, with a network that currently includes 1,200 towns in 44 states, continues to adapt to changing economic, demographic and retail trends and pressures facing Americaâs small historic towns â which Ms. Barnes will address in her talk. Main Street America is a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which created the initiative in the early 1980s in response to historic small town downtowns throughout the country where historic buildings were decaying and business competitiveness was not being adequately addressed. The Rockefeller Foundation awarded Erin and her co-founders at ioby the Jane Jacobs Medal for New Technology and Innovation. She has also been a freelance writer on climate change andother environmental issues. Earlier in her career, she was a community organizer and public information officer at the Save Our Wild Salmon Coalition in Portland, Oregon. All ages are welcome, though youth must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required and limited to 15 participants.This program has a minimum of 5 participants. This May, weâll head out on a Wellness Walk along the Snavely Ford Trail, a scenic route that follows Antietam Creek for much of its length. Most of the hike is flat and shaded, offering a comfortable walk, with one short uphill climb near the end of the trail. Snavely Ford holds an important place in local history. During the Battle of Antietam, this location is where U.S. troops commanded by Isaac Rodman crossed Antietam Creek. Join us as we enjoy the natural beauty of the creek, keep an eye and ear out for birds, and enjoy each otherâs company in this lovely, historic landscape. Walking Distance: Approximately 2 miles or less.Pace/Activities: Moderate (steady but able to maintain a conversation)Exposure: Partial shade. Some areas of full sun.Terrain: Asphalt, gravel, and mowed grass. The hike is mostly flat except for one uphill climb at the end of the trail. Her favorite word is âLookâ and my favorite place is Yankauer Nature Preserve. Weed Warrior Training at Cool Spring Preserve

All youth (under 18) must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required. This program has a max of 15 participants. PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible If you want to volunteer at our nature preserves, but canât make it to the scheduled volunteer workdays, this training is for you! Our Associate Director of Conservation and Operations â KC Walters â will lead this PVAS Weed Warrior Certification training. Certified Weed Warriors will be given the knowledge and the tools needed to tackle invasive species at the preserves on their own schedules. Plus, they will be connected with other Weed Warriors to work together. No work gloves or tools are needed for the training, but long pants and bug spray are recommended. After successful completion of training, participants will become certified PVAS Weed Warriors! This certification comes with distinction, an awesome t-shirt to wear while performing duties, and exclusive access to the best tools of the trade. Read our pricing structure & policies. About our Host: Katelyn (KC) Walters, a Shepherdstown native, is our Associate Director of Conservation and Operations. KC is a Shepherd alumna, and holds a M.S. in Biology, with a focus in forest ecology, from James Madison University. Her masterâs thesis evaluated the long-term effectiveness of treating hemlock trees for hemlock woolly adelgid infestation in Shenandoah National Park. During her college education, she interned with The Conservation Fund: Freshwater Institute and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. After graduation, she worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service in southeastern Louisiana where she served as a forestry technician and became a certified Wildland Firefighter. KC then returned home to Shepherdstown and worked with Sustainable Solutions LLC as the Lead Natural Resources and GIS Technician. She joined the PVAS Team in April 2018 as the Land and Conservation Manager. Just shy of five years later, in January 2023, KC was promoted to the Associate Director position she holds today. KC enjoys riding horses, working with her dog, Paisley, on agility training, and stewarding the natural resources on her own property.â[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Join us for our Wildflower Programs Working Group Meetingâan open, collaborative space for anyone interested in helping plan this yearâs wildflower programs. At this meeting we will be discussing possible late summer/fall wildflower programs. Whether youâre a seasoned botanical enthusiast or simply curious and looking to get involved, all are welcome. Join PVAS for a bird walk at Staufferâs Marsh Nature Preserve in Back Creek Valley, west of 81. This 46-acre PVAS nature preserve features a wetland restored through the USDAâs Wetland Reserve Program and is a paradise for migrating and nesting waterfowl. The property features easy, mowed trails with interpretive signs, two overlooks for waterfowl viewing, and even a pollinator meadow. Nature Journaling at Cool Spring Preserve | Birds of Cool Spring

PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible Tune in to birdsong, flight, and nesting behavior. Journal movement, sound, and the lively energy of the avian world in full spring bloom. The session will take place at Cool Spring Preserve, a 74-acre landscape of forest, meadow, and marsh in southern Jefferson County. Bullskin Run, a stream with historical significance, borders the preserve. Cool Spring is also a designated birding hotspotâan ideal setting to pause, observe, and create. In 2024, we expanded the preserve by 11 additional acres to help protect the sensitive Bullskin Run and Marl Marsh, in partnership with the West Virginia Land Trust. She leads a nature journaling club at her school and is currently a Master Naturalist candidate through PVAS.
